There’s not always a formal process for students to join. I used to sponsor our school’s GSA and the group of students shifted from week to week. I didn’t always know every kid. Some came regularly, others once in a while, and some only once. I also coached the speech team and the only time I needed to contact parents was if kids were going to compete at weekend tournaments. However, a lot of students just came to weekly practices without ever competing.
I totally understand that they can create their own groups and it could be worse, but again, teachers telling kids to keep secrets from parents to protect them rings too many bells and it is not ok.
