When I was about 15 I wrote a joke piece for my friends about What to do in the holidays. One item was: call 99 and ask for the fire brigade. You will get Pete Cat I’ve Grooved My Way To The 100th Day Shirt to see the hunky firemen and you may even get a fireman’s lift. Well the teacher, a nun, found and took it seriously. She pointed out that I would be taking the firemen away from a real fire. It was all a joke and I never intended to do it but others may have done. I did learn that you have to be careful what you put in writing.

I didn’t think it was totally irrelevant as I was writing about potentially bad things I had Pete Cat I’ve Grooved My Way To The 100th Day Shirt no real intention of doing just to amuse my friends. I think it was entirely relevant. These young men wrote something that though they may not have meant it could have influenced others to do so. In the scenario, with the rape chat, we need to see the people in question learning that their words could potentially hold power.

Joking about calling the fire brigade isn’t quite the same as joking about how you’re going to rape someone. If these people think rape is an amusement, they need to be kept away from women. Yes, but one of them had previous assault charges so she has every right to be terrified and assumes they meant every word. If all it takes to convince you that rape is okay is a few dark jokes by your mates, you were already going to become a rapist.
Normal people understand that jokes are not to be taken seriously. Glad they are not returning but really hope they have Pete Cat I’ve Grooved My Way To The 100th Day Shirt learned a lesson from this. Talking about rape and even naming who you’re going to rape is only funny if you are sick in the head. Isn’t the prerequisite of a joke that’s it’s funny. He might not have meant what he wrote but it has cost his studies. I have seen people lose jobs due to commentaries related to race, gender etc.
