Let’s stop pretending that a single model of education works for every child. Both would be better not all people are academic and not all are practical. It’s not a case of scrapping GCSE ‘s it’s about changing the assessment and the education syllabus in general. Too many children simply rote learn and pass their GCSE. Keep them, my point is that everyone learns differently, stop trying to put everyone into one tick box. We are in Scotland. My daughter is in 4th year at high school and sitting her National 5’s this year. Before she has even sat these exams she has chosen her subjects to study next year in the 5th year. These include day release vocational courses to college for a wide range of skills. I have never in the years of bringing up my children, seen more fear and stress in students than in the past seven years. It’s unnecessary learning for subjects not required in jobs.
The teachers are horrific when it comes to exam dates, cramming in extra learning so not to make the Sloth Running Team We’ll Get There When We Get There Shirt school and themselves look bad on league tables. During the majority of the years, teachers expect the students to research and look into how to do math, English etc. Let’s get back to basics with proper in school teaching on subjects that really matter in life.
